How fast the network delivers this reader's bytes, in bits per second, or null when the reader does not measure it or has not measured enough yet. The default answers null.
Count the bytes of the readers that openRelated made too, and count only the time that a download waits for the network. The time it waits for the player to read is not the network's. The player steps an HLS stream up to a higher variant only on this figure, so an HLS stream on a reader that answers null never steps up by itself.
The player calls this from its own thread, unlike the other members, so it must be safe to call while a read runs.
