Audio frames the output's peak limiter turned down because they would have passed full scale.

A loud surround mix folded to stereo, or an equaliser boost, can add up past full scale, and a device clamps each such sample, which squares off the wave and is heard as crackle. The player lowers the gain smoothly for a few milliseconds around such a passage instead, and counts each frame it lowered here. Zero for anything that never passes full scale, so a rising figure says the mix is too hot for the output.
