Counts what came over the wire: a seek served from the engine's byte cache adds nothing, and an item opened as a plain path, which the backend reads through its own protocol rather than through the engine's cache, stays at zero throughout. Zero therefore means "not measurable here", not "nothing was read". The segments and keys of an HLS stream count too.
