encoding
The encoding the file is in, which is then used as it is, with no guess (#515). Null decides from the bytes.
One of ENCODINGS, or any label the WHATWG Encoding Standard gives one of them, such as cp1250, latin2 or sjis, in any letter case. A file that is not in the encoding it is given still loads, with its bytes read as told, so the viewer sees the result of the choice. The five East Asian encodings are read by the backend's subtitle parser, which the FFmpeg backend supplies; with a backend that has no table for the one named, the file does not load.
